Q. Why does my toddler get diarrhea when he drinks orange juice?

Dr. Zibners' Answer:

Thanks Amanda from CA for sharing your kid’s issue with citrus. It’s rather an odd one, since we usually expect juices that are very high in sugar, such as apple, pear or prune to cause diarrhea. High sugar content causes water to be pulled into the bowels and can cause diarrhea. However, orange juice is higher in fiber and lower in sugar so it is weird that his only problem is with OJ. I would want to know if other citrus juices cause the same problem or if he can tolerate apple juice without difficulty. It may be that his little system just doesn’t like it.

"WHAT I LIKED: This book is written in a funny, down to earth way that doesn't make you feel like an idiot. I really would have appreciated something like this when my kids were really little and I freaked out over everything they put in their mouths. It has a scenario/question and answer format, with clear answers on when not to panic and when to call 911."
